Today could have been historic for New Jersey. But it ended as something many Jerseyans wanted to forget.
Hundreds of people gathered to watch, via a TV monitor in a overflow room, near the State House in Trenton as the state Senate rejected a bill to legalize same-sex marriage.
I made this photograph of one opponent of gay marriage as she waved her arms in celebration and yelled, "Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!" I was struck by the contrast: While so many demonstrators were visibly dejected, this one was jubilant. I also couldn't help but wonder whether I might eventually make the opposite picture, if and when New Jersey legalizes gay marriage.
